Live and Legacy game modes

As of November 2022 along with Update 14 was decided by game developer Frontier Developments to completely separate old game code (3.8) used for Horizons DLC (which was integrated as part of the vanilla ED game with release of following Odyssey DLC) and new game code (4.0) used for Odyssey DLC. It means that there are now two completelly separate game modes called Legacy and Live:

  1. Legacy mode will allow play Elite Dangerous game also for console commanders (Xbox, PS), but there will be no further narrative updates and there will be not available Odyssey DLC content (possibility to disembark from Ships or SRVs and follow-up gameplay features).
  2. Live mode will be available only for PCs, there is except Odyssey DLC available also all further developed game narrative content.

Devs info about "Legacy mode"

While “Live” will continue the unfolding events of Aftermath, we understand that some of our players have fond memories of the galaxy as it stands in 3.8 and as such we will convert version 3.8 into “Legacy Mode”. Every player will have a Legacy Commander profile created from their existing profile with separately tracked progress when Update 14 is released. Legacy mode will be accessible from the launcher as a separate download from the Live game. Whilst there will be no new narrative content such as GalNet or Community Goals, you will still be able to affect the galaxy via the background simulation. Actions in Legacy Mode will not affect the Live game. All cosmetics purchased prior to Update 14 will be available across both Legacy and Live versions. Moving forwards, some cosmetics may be exclusive to Live mode. These will be clearly marked as such in the store.

Devs info about "Live mode"

As of Update 14, version 4.0 will become the “Live” mode in which all new content and events will be introduced. Focusing development on a single version branch has already been essential to delivering content of the same calibre as the Azimuth Saga finale. Aftermath will see its next major release with galaxy-wide implications in Update 14, with more to come in Updates 15 and 16. What we can say for now about Updates 15 and 16 is that they will both contain new content and gameplay mechanics linked to the unfolding events in the galaxy. More on this will be revealed next year.

Console players possibility to transfer Cmdr profile on PC

Possibility to transfer consoles commanders profiles on PC is active from 04/2023 via The Console Profile Transfer Portal until further notice. Official note to the Portal availability is as follows:

The portal will remain open indefinitely to allow as many Commanders to take advantage of the copy process as possible. Should the portal need to close, we will announce it in advance. Please encourage any fellow console Commanders you know to consider copying their profile to PC. This option comes at no additional cost, includes a free PC copy of Elite Dangerous, and your original console profile will remain available for play.
